Ramadan in Jordan
Ramadan
is the 9th month in the Islamic Calendar, the holy month of fasting
in which Muslims are not allowed to eat, drink and smoke from dawn until
sunset. The
Islamic calendar is about 10-11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar hence
the start of Ramadan falls on different dates and is based on the visual
sightings of the crescent moon.
In
2016 the holy month is expected between 06 June to 06 July, plus or less
01 day according to the actual sight of the moon.

What to expect when
travelling during Ramadan?
Touring Jordan or
any other Middle East country during the holy month has its advantages and
disadvantages.
Tourist sites are
open from 08:00 to 15:00, except in Petra and Wadi Rum where you can stay until
sunset.
Banks and government
offices are open from 10:00 to 15:00. Business and malls opens from 11:00-18:00
(except Fridays) and reopens again at 21:00 until midnight.
Non Muslims are not
expected to fast but are kindly requested to refrain from eating, drinking and
smoking in public during fasting hours as a sign of respect.
When it comes to
dining some restaurants and food stores are open during the day, especially in
tourist areas and in the city.
Muslims fast
breaking is called Iftar, people are welcoming and happy to invite you to share
food after sunset as they break the fast with family or friends. Restaurants
offer Iftar Menu during this time.
Streets are empty during
the Iftar time, then afterwards back to normal as many people are up the
evening, eating fruits, Arabic sweets and visiting friends.
The holy month
falls on summer, weather is hot and the days are long. The energy of the people
who fast is low during this time of the year.
Majority of hotels
offer promotional during these period except in the end of Ramadan or the
celebration of Eid Al Fitr where hotel prices goes up again.
